Open most bags labelled "potting soil" at a hardware store and you will find something that looks great in the bag and behaves badly in a pot — dense, sticky, slow to drain and quick to compact. Those mixes are designed for outdoor planters, where rain, wind and worms keep things moving. Indoors, in a pot on a shelf, the same soil suffocates roots. This guide explains what a real houseplant mix needs, which bagged products are worth buying, and how to mix your own for half the price.

Why indoor soil is different

Good indoor potting mix has two jobs that are almost in tension with one another. It has to hold enough water to keep roots hydrated between waterings, and it has to drain quickly enough that air can reach those same roots in the gaps. Root cells need oxygen as well as water — drown them in saturated soil for too long, and they suffocate and rot.

Outdoor garden soil and most cheap "potting soils" are mostly fine particles. When you pour water through them, they pack down. The air gaps disappear, the surface crusts over, and the root zone becomes a swampy brick. That is why houseplants thrive in mixes with deliberately chunky textures — they keep their structure even after months of watering.

The shorthand to remember: good indoor soil holds water and air. Soggy soil is failing at half its job.

The key ingredients, explained

You only need to know a handful of materials to understand any houseplant mix on the shelf or build your own:

  • Coco coir — fluffy fibres from coconut husks. The modern, peat-free moisture base of most quality mixes. Holds water beautifully without compacting.
  • Sphagnum peat moss — the traditional moisture base. Works well but is harvested unsustainably; coco coir is the greener choice.
  • Perlite — white, lightweight, popped volcanic glass. Creates permanent air pockets. The single most useful houseplant amendment.
  • Pumice — heavier than perlite, slower-draining, longer-lasting. Excellent for succulents and bigger pots that need stability.
  • Orchid bark — chunks of pine or fir bark. Used in aroid and orchid mixes for rough, chunky structure.
  • Worm castings — finely processed worm manure. Adds slow-release nutrients and improves soil biology. A little goes a long way.
  • Horticultural charcoal — porous, sterile, helps absorb excess moisture and odours. Optional but useful in semi-hydro and aroid mixes.
  • Vermiculite — moisture-retentive flakes. Useful in propagation and seed-starting mixes; less so in long-term houseplant pots.

Bagged mixes worth buying

Brand names vary by region, but the labels to look for do not. When you pick up a bag, read the back. A good houseplant mix will list ingredients like coco coir or peat, perlite, pumice, bark or worm castings — and ideally not much else. Avoid anything described as "moisture control," which usually contains water-retaining gels that worsen overwatering, or any product called "topsoil" or "garden soil," which is far too dense for pots.

A few reliable categories:

  • "Indoor" or "houseplant" mixes from quality brands work fine straight out of the bag for most foliage plants. Adding a couple of extra handfuls of perlite never hurts.
  • "Cactus & succulent" mixes are heavier on the mineral side — perlite, pumice and sand. Use as-is for succulents, jade and cacti.
  • "Orchid" or "aroid" mixes are mostly bark, with some coir and charcoal. Great for monstera, philodendron, anthurium and similar epiphytic aroids.

DIY: an all-purpose houseplant mix

Mixing your own is the cheapest way to get great soil, especially if you have more than a handful of plants. This recipe works for most common foliage plants — pothos, philodendron, dracaena, peace lily, rubber plant, dieffenbachia and friends:

All-purpose recipe (by volume)

  • 4 parts coco coir (or peat)
  • 2 parts perlite
  • 1 part worm castings or finished compost
  • Optional: 1 part orchid bark for chunkier, aroid-style structure

Put everything in a large tub or wheelbarrow, mix dry, then add water a little at a time until the blend just clumps when you squeeze it. That is the right moisture for potting. Make a batch big enough for several plants and you have potting mix on hand whenever you need it.

Specialty mixes

Once you understand the components, customising for a specific plant is easy. A few tested starting points:

  • Succulents & cacti: 2 parts perlite or pumice, 1 part coir, 1 part coarse sand. Drains hard and fast — exactly what arid roots want.
  • Aroids (monstera, philodendron, anthurium): 2 parts orchid bark, 2 parts coir, 2 parts perlite, 1 part worm castings, optional handful of charcoal. Chunky, airy and rich.
  • Ferns, calatheas, prayer plants: the standard all-purpose mix, with a little extra coir and a top dressing of sphagnum to hold surface moisture.
  • Orchids (phalaenopsis): almost pure medium-grade orchid bark, with a bit of charcoal and sphagnum. Orchid roots want air around them, not soil.

Common soil mistakes to avoid

  • Putting "drainage rocks" at the bottom of the pot. A myth — research has shown gravel layers actually raise the wet zone in the pot. Use a pot with drainage holes and a well-draining mix instead.
  • Reusing old, depleted soil for a new plant. After a year or two in a pot, mix loses structure and nutrients, and may harbour pests. Refresh or replace it at repotting time.
  • Using outdoor garden soil indoors. Heavy, full of fungus, weed seeds and pests. Just do not.
  • Buying "moisture control" mixes. The water-holding crystals worsen the most common houseplant problem — overwatering — by keeping soil wet longer than is healthy.
  • Compacting soil when potting. Firm gently to remove air pockets around the root ball, but never press hard. You are trying to preserve those tiny air gaps, not eliminate them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the same potting mix for every houseplant?

For most foliage plants — pothos, philodendron, dracaena, peace lily, rubber plant and so on — yes, a good all-purpose indoor mix works fine. Succulents, cacti, orchids and chunky-mix aroids do better with mixes tuned to their roots.

How often should I replace soil?

Every one to two years, alongside repotting, is a good rule. Soil loses its structure and most of its nutrients over time, regardless of fertilizing.

Do I need to sterilise soil before using it?

Bagged commercial mixes are generally clean enough out of the bag. If you are reusing old soil or worried about fungus gnats, you can bake moist soil at 80–90 °C (180 °F) for 30 minutes, or microwave it in batches.

Is peat-free really better?

Ecologically, yes — peat bogs are slow-growing carbon sinks. Coco coir performs almost identically and is a renewable byproduct. The mainstream industry is steadily shifting that way.
