The worst feeling for a plant person is unlocking the front door after two weeks away and seeing a row of crispy, drooping leaves in the window. The good news: with about thirty minutes of preparation the day before you leave, almost any houseplant collection can survive a week, two weeks, even a full month unattended. The trick is matching the method to the trip length — and to the plants you actually own.

This guide walks through every method that genuinely works, ranked roughly by trip length, plus the prep checklist most people skip and exactly what to tell a plant-sitter if you hire one. We've left out the "tips" that don't survive contact with reality (the upside-down water bottle, please).

First, know how long your plants can really go

Before you reach for water bottles and globes, sort your plants into rough endurance categories. Different species can survive wildly different stretches of neglect, and a setup that's wasted effort for a snake plant might still leave a calathea fried.

Those numbers assume a normal indoor temperature (about 20–22°C / 68–72°F), bright indirect light, and pots that aren't bone dry the day you leave. Crank the thermostat up, leave a plant in direct sun, or put it in a tiny terracotta pot and you can halve the time. Counter-intuitive but important. A larger pot of soil holds water for longer than the size of the plant suggests. A small spider plant in a 25 cm pot can outlast a chunky monstera in a 15 cm pot. Pot volume, not plant size, drives how long the soil stays moist.

The 30-minute pre-trip prep checklist

Whatever watering system you settle on, the same prep work pays off for every trip. Do these the day before you leave, not the morning of — you want time to spot a problem.

  1. Water deeply, once. The morning before departure, water each plant until liquid runs from the drainage hole. Tip out anything in the saucer. Do not "stock up" with extra waterings the days before — that's how root rot happens.
  2. Move plants away from windows. Pull bright-window plants two to three feet back into the room. They'll need less water and won't bake if a heatwave hits. Don't shove them into a hallway or closet, though — total darkness for two weeks does its own damage.
  3. Group plants together. Cluster them on a rug or large tray. Plants transpire water vapour, so a cluster creates its own humid microclimate and slows water loss by roughly 20–30%.
  4. Lower the thermostat. Set indoor heating or cooling to 18–20°C (65–68°F). Cooler air means slower transpiration and less water demand. (It also saves on bills.)
  5. Pinch off flowers and big new growth. Blooms and large new leaves drink water disproportionately. Cutting them frees the plant to coast.

  7. Close the blinds halfway. Especially for south- and west-facing windows in summer. You want light, not a greenhouse effect.
  8. Skip fertilizer. Don't feed in the week before a trip. Recently fertilized plants grow faster and drink more — the opposite of what you want.

Trips up to one week (5–7 days)

This is the easy bracket. For most foliage plants, the prep checklist above is the whole answer. Water deeply, group together, pull back from windows, walk out the door.

The plants that don't tolerate a week unattended — thirsty ferns, calatheas, prayer plants, seedlings — need one of these:

  • The bathtub or shower-tray trick. Line the bottom of the tub with old towels. Set plants on the towels (not the porcelain — cold transfers shock the roots). Add 2–3 cm of standing water. The towels wick moisture up through the drainage holes and the closed bathroom holds humidity at 60–70%. Don't use this for succulents, cacti, snake plants, or anything you suspect is rot-prone. And don't use a tub with a leaky drain.
  • Plastic-bag mini-greenhouse. Water the plant well, then loosely tent a clear plastic bag over it — use a few chopsticks or skewers stuck into the soil to keep the plastic off the leaves. The trapped humidity slows water loss dramatically. Works best in indirect light; never do this in direct sun (it cooks the plant).
  • A clear plastic storage tub. Same principle as the bag, but cleaner. Put 3–4 small plants inside a clear bin with the lid loosely on. Good for a row of small calatheas or ferns. Skip this for plants that need air movement (hoyas, succulents) or anything that fits the bin only with leaves pressed against the walls.

Trips of one to two weeks (8–14 days)

Now you need active systems for anything that isn't drought-tolerant. There are five methods worth knowing — ranked by reliability:

1. Wick watering (most reliable; covered in full below)

A cotton wick or capillary rope draws water from a reservoir into the soil at the rate the plant pulls it through. This is the only fully-passive method that genuinely matches the plant's demand — busy plants drink more, dormant ones drink less. See the step-by-step instructions further down.

2. Self-watering planters

Pots with a built-in reservoir below the soil — brand names like Lechuza, but generic versions from any garden centre work the same way. Once established, these keep plants reliably watered for two to three weeks, and the plant draws water on demand through a wicking medium or growing through into the reservoir.

The catch: a freshly repotted plant won't have roots in the reservoir yet, so the first time you use one of these, water from the top for 6–8 weeks first to let roots grow down. Use the reservoir only after the plant is established.

3. Capillary mats

A fibre mat — sold for greenhouse use, or a piece of cheap microfibre will do — soaked in water and laid in a tray under your pots. The pots draw moisture up through the drainage holes. Works well for groups of small terracotta pots. Less reliable for big plastic pots, where the contact area is too small.

4. Self-watering globes

The glass orbs you see in shop windows. They work, kind of, but they're the least predictable method here. Two failure modes are common: the soil seals the spout and nothing flows out, or the entire globe empties into the pot within hours. Always test for a full week at home before trusting one on a trip. Use them as supplemental insurance, not as your only system.

5. Drip irrigation kits

Battery-powered or gravity-fed kits with thin tubing snaking from pot to pot. Excellent for collections of more than 15 plants. Worth the setup time only if you travel often — otherwise the wick method is easier and more forgiving. If you do install one, test it for 48 hours before you leave and check every drip emitter individually.

For trips at the long end of this range, combine methods: wick watering for medium plants, the bathtub for ferns, drought-tolerant plants left untouched.

Trips of three to four weeks

Past two weeks, automated systems alone are a gamble. For longer absences, a human visit at least once during the trip is the only truly reliable plan — even if every plant has a watering setup.

Your three real options:

  • Plant-sitter (best). See the section below for what to brief them on. Even one visit halfway through the trip transforms the outcome.
  • Boarding with a friend. For small collections, drop off your most precious plants at a friend's place. Pack each pot in a tray to avoid spills in transit and supply written care notes.
  • Maximum self-watering + leave the thirsty ones behind. If no human is available, accept that ferns, calatheas, prayer plants and recently potted divisions probably won't survive. Set up wick watering or self-watering planters for everything sturdier and write off the rest.

Wick watering: the most reliable DIY system

If you read only one practical section in this guide, read this one. Wick watering keeps a plant evenly damp for up to two weeks without any electronics, batteries or expensive kit. It is the method professional growers use when they go away.

You need:

  • A length of cotton wick — an old cotton shoelace, a strand pulled from a cotton mop, or capillary wicking rope from a garden centre. Cotton works because it draws water by capillary action. Synthetic fibres often don't.
  • A water reservoir — a glass jar, a plastic bottle, a vase — that sits higher than the plant's pot. Gravity helps the flow.
  • Filtered or room-temperature tap water.

Setup, step by step:

  1. Submerge the wick in water and squeeze it repeatedly until it is fully saturated. A dry cotton wick won't start drawing water on its own.
  2. Push 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) of the soaked wick down into the soil near the root ball — not against the stem, not in the very edge of the pot.
  3. Drop the free end into the reservoir. Keep the reservoir on a shelf or stack of books higher than the pot.
  4. Set the whole rig up at least 24 hours before you leave. Check the soil the next morning. It should feel evenly damp, not soggy.
  5. If the soil is too dry after a day, add a second wick or switch to a thicker rope. If it's pooling water, swap for a thinner wick or move the reservoir lower.

One reservoir, many plants. A single large reservoir — a 4-litre jug, say — can feed three or four medium plants if each gets its own wick. Cluster the plants around the reservoir and run a wick to each one.

A correctly sized wick setup will run for 10–14 days on a 2-litre reservoir for a medium plant in a 15 cm pot. Larger pots need more water; bright sunny spots drain faster. Always test first.

Hiring a plant-sitter (and exactly what to tell them)

A friend who's offered to "pop in and water the plants" almost always does one of two things: overwaters, killing the rot-prone ones, or forgets entirely, killing the thirsty ones. Both failures come from the same source: you haven't told them what each plant actually needs. Spend 15 minutes writing it down.

The brief should include:

  • A grouped list. Not plant-by-plant. Group into "water once a week", "water once during the trip" and "do not water". Two cats need feeding daily; plants don't.
  • The finger test. Show them how. Push a finger 2–3 cm into the soil; if it's damp, walk away. This single instruction prevents most plant-sitter disasters.
  • "When in doubt, don't." Make this rule explicit in writing. Underwatering for two weeks is almost always recoverable. Overwatering is often fatal.

  • One photo of each plant. Tape a small printout near each pot with the name and watering instructions. People remember rooms; they don't remember plants.
  • What to do if something goes wrong. Your phone number, or a note saying "leave wilted plants alone — we'll fix it when we're back." This stops a panicked sitter from drowning a wilting plant.
  • A small thank-you. A bottle of wine, a takeaway gift card, or a few cuttings of their favourite plant. People who feel appreciated do better the next time.

Five vacation mistakes that kill plants

  1. Doubling up on watering "to be safe". Watering twice in three days creates the soggy soil conditions that cause root rot. One deep watering on departure day is enough.
  2. Trusting one unfamiliar system. Whatever you use — globe, wick, mat — test it for at least 48 hours at home first. Half the failures we hear about would have been caught by a single test run.
  3. Closing the curtains completely. Total darkness for two weeks causes leaf drop and yellowing even on tough plants. Filtered light is fine; pitch black is not.
  4. Cranking the AC down for "your house's sake". Empty homes don't need to be 18°C, and cold rooms with damp soil are a recipe for fungal issues. Aim for 19–22°C (66–72°F).
  5. Doing all the prep on departure morning. Watered an hour before leaving means the pot is heavy with water no plant can use yet. Water 12–18 hours before so excess can drain and the soil settles into a damp, not soggy, baseline.

What to do the day you get back

Don't water everything immediately, even if a few plants look thirsty. Walk the room with a finger and check each pot first. Watering a plant whose roots have just started to rot is the fastest way to finish them off.

A return-day routine that works:

  1. Take down any plastic bags, tents or tub setups. Plants left in trapped humidity for two weeks need to breathe.
  2. Move plants back to their normal spots.
  3. Check each pot with the finger test. Water only the ones that are dry at depth.
  4. Inspect for pests — a closed-up house is a holiday for spider mites, fungus gnats and mealybugs. If you see anything, deal with it before the rest of the collection catches it.
